Obtaining Public Housing Assistance

In order to be considered for any housing assistance program, a person must first apply for the program. On the application they must provide all required information to qualify them for subsidized housing programs. They may choose between two available programs in Aurora and will be placed on the waiting list due to the large number of persons requesting housing assistance. People are pulled from the waiting list by preference or priority first and then in chronological order.

Definition of Subsidized Housing Assistance

All subsidized housing programs administered by the Aurora Housing Authority are based on the principal of a participant paying 30% of their adjusted gross income for their portion of the rent payment. The AHA pays the remaining 70% directly to the landlord in the case of the Housing Choice Voucher Program and receives annual subsidy payments from HUD to pay for the management and maintenance of public housing units. The Aurora Housing Authority receives the majority of its operating revenue from HUD and the remainder from rent received.

Adjusted gross income is determined by taking the income for a one year period and subtracting allowable expenses for items such as the number of children in a family ($480.00 per child), number of disabled or senior persons in the household ($400.00 per person) and medical costs. Participants also receive a utility allowance which is subtracted from their 30% adjusted gross income amount to determine their final rent payment.
