The Aurora Housing Authority (AHA) has been selected to receive a second energy grant. The grant was awarded to the AHA by the Smart Energy Design Assistance Center (SEDAC) at the University of Illinois at the Urbana-Champaign Campus and the Illinois Energy Office at the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO). The grant awarded to AHA is part of the "Efficient Living: Illinois Public Housing Authority Program," an effort that provides energy upgrades to extremely low and low-income public housing households in Illinois.
The AHA will receive an Efficient Living Electric Grant Sub Award of $23,204 and an Efficient Living Gas Grant Sub Award for $168,690 for a total of $191,894. It was a competitive grant that the AHA applied for in October 2011. The grant funds will be used to replace incandescent lamps with CFLs, replace Exit Signs with new LED signs, replace ceiling fans with energy star fans, replace shower heads with new low-flow heads and replace older boiler heating systems with new high efficiency models.
Earlier this year, the AHA was awarded $307,040 by SEDAC which allowed for the replacement of inefficient air conditioner units at Maple Terrace and Centennial House senior and disabled resident buildings and replacement of refrigerators with energy star rated efficient appliances at those developments as well as at its family sites. All old appliances were successfully recycled as a condition of the grant.
Jean Federman, Executive Director of the AHA, said that the AHA is committed to improving energy efficiency throughout its properties. "Not only does energy management benefit the AHA financially, it also reduces the environmental impact and improves the comfort of our residents many of whom are elderly and/or disabled." |
